When I was 18 I wanted nothing more than to play college sports. Nobody in my family had ever done that before. Achieving this goal was a huge deal to me.
After both the baseball and basketball coaches told me “NO!” I felt defeated, confused and frustrated.
Then my luck changed.
Because I was feeling a bit dejected, and nervous about starting college and not even getting a tryout, I choose to sit and sulk in the back of the classroom.
Can you relate?
Like I said, fortunately my luck was about to change. It always seems to work that way. Anyway, next to me sat two guys who talked a lot. I overheard them say soccer tryouts were tomorrow.
I thought, "Wait a minute… I can play soccer.”
Then my brain took its normal detour into Worryville.
“You haven’t played in 6 months. This is college soccer not AYSO. Remember its 45 minute halves. You didn’t play in high school. What if the coach says no way? Can you take the kind of rejection again?”
And on and on and on this went for about an hour.
Finally the ridiculous mind chatter slowed and I was able to get ONE logical question into my brain.
What was that question?
“Do you want to play or not?”
Immediately my mind and body started to tingle with excitement as I screamed, “YES!!!!!!”
Thank God I didn’t scream it out loud. Everyone in class would have thought I was weird.
Of course my soccer career was not miraculously created because I asked and answered that one question. But it was definitely how I launched myself out of Worryville.
With training, imagination, and a lot of practice I became a 2 year starter and scored a couple of game winning goals. It was a tremendous experience.
Well my friend, 2010 is upon us. And I see big things coming your way.
Wishing You Confidence and Skill,
